Education – passport out of poverty
Educating children is one of the best ways of giving them a better future. We support street children to stay in school, offer early years education and provide nutrition and health advice. We also train teachers in child protection and raise parents’ awareness of the importance of educating their children, and respecting their rights. Our education programmes support nearly 2,500 children in the slums of Kolkata each year.
Crèche
The school drop out rate for street children is very high. These children struggle to keep up with the work, they are often badly taught, or are under pressure to earn money. The guidance provided by qualified teachers in our coaching centres help these children remain in school. We also provide nutritious meals, health check ups, books and uniforms.
The coaching centres are also the base for much wider education work with the local community. This includes counselling sessions, mothers' meetings, health check ups, teacher training and awareness raising with the parents and others about the importance of educating children.
